What days are the markets in Sommières?

The traditional market takes place on Saturday mornings and during the months of July and August also in the evenings from 18 to 23h.

Remember to arrive very early to be able to park more easily. Otherwise, I recommend you do it in the parking lots outside the town and then walk to the market. It is a short walk and also beautiful.

Taste fresh oysters in the charming market square

Is there anything more wonderful than enjoying these delicacies of the sea in such a picturesque setting?

Imagine being surrounded by vibrant colors and tantalizing aromas as you stroll through the lively Sommières market. Suddenly, your eyes fall on a stall full of fresh oysters that seem to be calling to you. You can’t resist their temptation!

The oysters of Sommières are authentic jewels of the Mediterranean Sea, cultivated in crystal clear waters and raised with the greatest care. Its salty taste and delicate texture will transport you to the French shores in every bite.

But here comes the trick: to complement the experience and further enhance the flavors, we recommend accompanying these marine delicacies with a good white wine. The perfect combination between the freshness of oysters and the subtle notes of white wine will create a symphony of flavors on your palate. The contrast between the salinity of the sea and the softness of the wine will leave you speechless. It is the ideal pairing to enjoy the true essence of Sommières and its culinary culture.

So, dear friends, when you visit the Sommières market, do not forget to stop at the oyster stand and let yourself be seduced by this unique gastronomic experience.

Learn more about the Château de Sommières

The castle belonged, in the eleventh century, to the lordship of the Bermond d’Anduze-Sauve, related to the Count of Toulouse. Converted into a royal stronghold from 1220-1223, the castle underwent major refurbishment works: construction of a second tower, now disappeared, a chapel, residential outbuildings, development of a double wall and fortification of the plateau de la Vignasse.

The tower, called “tout Bermond”, dominates the entire city from its 22 meters high.

The defense of the building is secured from the terrace by a series of battlements and merlons marked with loopholes. Access to the top is still via a spiral staircase, very narrow, built within the thickness of the masonry.

From the seventeenth century, the castle served as a barracks. The chapel became a prison. Sold as a national asset after the Revolution, the site was divided into several properties. In 1926, the city became the owner of the tower, which was then registered in the inventory of Historical Monuments.

In 1936, the city’s Water Service built two reservoirs, destroying much of the buildings of the former barracks.

The historical, architectural and archaeological interest of the site was recognized in 2010. The entire castle is now designated as a “Historical Monument”.
