This spacious and elegant square, surrounded by classic Haussmann-style buildings, gives you a vibrant and lively first impression of the city. At its center stands the Fountain of the Three Graces, an iconic sculpture created in 1773 by Étienne d’Antoine. It represents Aglaya, Euphrosyne, and Thalia—the Three Graces from Greek mythology—and is undoubtedly one of the most photographed landmarks in Montpellier.
From here, the main streets branch out into the historic neighborhood of L’Écusson, your next stop.

In France, everything starts and ends early, so make sure to begin your walk first thing in the morning. At this time, the square is peaceful, and the light is soft—perfect for enjoying the space without the crowds.
This is the ideal moment to snap unique photos of the Fountain of the Three Graces and the majestic Montpellier Opera House, whose stunning neoclassical facade dominates the square.

Rue de la Vieille is one of those hidden gems in Montpellier that I absolutely love, and I promise it will be a unique experience for you too. What makes this charming little street so special are two delightful boutiques dedicated to stationery, vintage postcards, and one-of-a-kind objects that seem to belong to another era. The street is brimming with intricate details you won’t find anywhere else.

What to see in Montpellier. Place de la Fontaine: A Perfect Stop to Recharge
Another spot I absolutely love in L’Écusson is Place de la Fontaine, a charming little square right next to the Saint-Roch Church.
Here, you’ll find some super cozy cafes, making it the perfect place to take your first break of the day. Sit down, enjoy a delicious cup of coffee, and soak in the calm rhythm of the square while admiring the surrounding architecture. It’s the ideal spot to recharge before diving back into exploring the historic neighborhood.
Diego’s Tip:
Don’t be afraid to get “lost” in the streets of L’Écusson. Wandering aimlessly is the best way to stumble upon hidden treasures like Rue de la Vieille or charming little squares where time seems to stand still.
What I Love About This Spot:
- The magic of Rue de la Vieille and its postcard-filled boutiques.
- Sipping coffee at Place de la Fontaine next to Saint-Roch Church.

3. The Arc de Triomphe – 10:30 AM
At 10:30, it’s time to visit one of Montpellier’s most iconic landmarks: the Arc de Triomphe. Inspired by its famous “big brother” in Paris, this monumental arch is an absolute must-see on any itinerary for what to do in Montpellier in one day.
Built in 1691 to honor King Louis XIV, Montpellier’s Arc de Triomphe—also known as the Porte du Peyrou—stands at the end of the elegant Rue Foch and serves as the symbolic gateway to the Promenade du Peyrou. Its structure is adorned with intricate reliefs celebrating the victories and achievements of the Sun King, making it a stunning example of classical French architecture.

Known locally as the Promenade du Peyrou, this iconic spot was built in the 17th century to honor Louis XIV and is a remarkable example of classic French urban design. From here, the horizon opens up to reveal the Saint-Clément Aqueduct, an 18th-century engineering marvel that continues to impress with its scale and precision.
What Not to Miss:
- The Equestrian Statue of Louis XIV: Standing proudly at the center of the esplanade, this majestic statue depicts the Sun King in all his glory. It’s also one of the most photogenic spots on the promenade.
- The Château d’Eau: At the far end of the esplanade lies this elegant hexagonal water tower, designed in the 18th century. Its reflection in the surrounding fountain is simply magical.
- The Saint-Clément Aqueduct: At the edge of the esplanade, this masterpiece of ancient engineering takes you back in time. Photography lovers will find this corner absolutely captivating.

This is the perfect place to take a break. Sit on one of the benches, enjoy the views of the aqueduct, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.
On clear days, don’t miss the chance to see the Pyrenees on the horizon—they’re breathtaking!

If your visit happens to fall on a Tuesday or Saturday, make sure to check out the Marché des Arceaux, located right at the foot of the aqueduct. You’ll find local products, delicious cheeses, and artisan bread in a lively and vibrant setting. It’s one of my favorite spots to visit every time I’m in Montpellier!

5. Saint Peter’s Cathedral – 12 PM
By midday, your one-day itinerary in Montpellier brings you to one of the city’s most striking and unique buildings: Saint Peter’s Cathedral.
This Gothic cathedral, with its imposing silhouette that looks more like a medieval fortress than a church, is an unmissable stop in Montpellier’s historic center.
Built in the 14th century by order of Pope Urban V, who studied in Montpellier, the cathedral is a stunning example of southern Gothic architecture.
The first thing that will strike you is its enormous portico, supported by two gigantic circular columns that give it a monumental air.
The facade is so robust and austere that, at a glance, it may remind you more of a fortress than a church.
6. La Place de la Canourgue 12:30 PM
From Saint Peter’s Cathedral, climb a set of stairs that feels like it’s leading you to a hidden corner, and suddenly you’ll stumble upon my absolute favorite square in Montpellier: Place de la Canourgue.
This plaza is a true oasis of tranquility, one of those spots where it’s impossible not to be enchanted.
At the center of the square, you’ll find a stunning sculpture: the famous statue of two unicorns, crafted from marble salvaged from an unfinished cathedral.
This unique piece gives the plaza an air of mystery and legend. The contrast between the unicorns’ white stone and the vibrant flowers that decorate the square is simply breathtaking.
The Perfect Spot for Lunch in Montpellier
Place de la Canourgue is surrounded by charming cafes and quaint restaurants, making it the ideal place to stop for lunch during your one-day tour of Montpellier.
In this unique setting, you can sit on a sunny terrace and savor the flavors of local gastronomy. From a creamy brandade de morue (salt cod purée) to a delicious cheese platter featuring regional varieties, all paired with a classic wine from the region—you’ll have plenty of options to enjoy a delightful pause in this magical square.

What to do in Montpellier with time to spare
If you still have time after exploring the historic center, I recommend checking out some of Montpellier’s modern and vibrant areas: Antigone or Le Quartier Méditerranée. Both are fantastic options to wrap up your day with a completely different vibe, full of contrasts.

Just a few minutes from Montpellier’s old town, the Antigone district is a stunning display of contemporary architecture.
